Godey’s Fashions 1880s Canvas Collage

Original fashion themed collage piece, entitled “Godey’s Fashions – 1880”. This collaged artwork was made with various vintage ephemera, book text, book illustrations, stencils, acrylic paint, inks and charcoal, on a canvas board. Stamped, dated and signed by artist (me, woo!) on back.

Like A Butterfly Canvas Collage

It’s time for another step out showing how I created one of my mini canvas collages!


I started out with a primed 4×4 hardboard panel:

Collage on a bunch of vintage ephemera for a base:

Add some stenciling with acrylic paint:

Then collage on some tissue paper, pattern tissue and mulberry paper:

Outline title in gel pen and glue on butterfly:

Using charcoal pencil, outline the butterfly image:

Splatter acrylic inks all over:

Edge the whole piece with charcoal pencil and finish it off with a coat of gel medium to seal it!

Here’s another step-by-step!


Starting with a blank 5″ x 7″ canvas board:

made a background with vintage security envelopes, correspondence and book text:

added some acrylic paint with stencils:

rubber stamping with a solvent ink pad:

checking the placement of the book illustrations:

then i glued down the pics with gel medium and splattered with acrylic inks:

charcoal pencil around the pictures:

and more charcoal around the edges, then sealed with gel medium!

step out time! i usually forget to take in process pics, not this time! So warning: post is all photos…


started off with a mini 2×4 canvas:

layered some vintage ephemera – security envelopes, correspondence, book text:

next came stenciling with acrylic paint daubers:

and some rubber stamps with a solvent ink pad:

check placement of antique book illustrations:

then glue down the illustrations and add more ink drops:

outline illustrations and frame with charcoal pencil, seal with gel medium and we’re done!
